enrique breccia was born in buenos aires
(argentina) in 1945, son of alberto breccia: talent runs thick in the
family, and both of enrique's sisters -patricia and cristina- are also
accomplished comic artists.
he starts working professionally in the '60s by
illustrating novels in argentina, but his first important work is
"la vida del che", on which he collaborates with his father
and with the late writer hector german oesterheld: the original artwork
for this story will be burned a little later because of the political
situation in the country, then under dictatorship, and -more tragically-
oesterheld will become, with his whole family, a desaparecido when both
him and his whole family "disappeared" at the hand of the
government.
enrique then starts in 1972 a eight year
collaboration (under a pseudonym) with british publisher fleetway
on the series "spy 13". during this tenure he also produces
"la leyenda de thyl ulenspiegel",
a spatter of short stories and what will become his most famous
character, "alvar mayor".
the '80s and '90s see him work on a number of
other stories like "el cazador del
tiempo", "el peregrino de las estrellas",
"el sueñero" and many
others which, in part, will be collected in the volume "historias
cortas" by publisher doedytores.
his debut in north-american comics happens on the
pages of "x-force" for marvel in 2000, then followed by
a cover for "uncanny x-men", a "legion worlds" and a
"batman: gotham knights" story for dc comics. editor
karen berger then assigned him a painted "lovecraft" graphic
novel and, when this was done, the reins of the current "swamp
thing" incarnation.
